| Tribute
to James D. Penny
1931-1994
By a friend
It was with shock and sadness
that we learned in April that Jim was seriously ill with cancer. His death on May
11,1994 took away a friend and co-worker who we had all known for many years.
Jim Penny was born in
Kent, England, eldest of five children, and had three sisters and one brother. After
attending school and art college, he joined the Royal Air Force at age 19 and was involved
in radio communications while stationed in different parts of the world during the 1950's.
He left the Royal Air Force and in 1959, shortly after his marriage, emigrated to
Canada with his wife, Jennifer. They settled in Edmonton were they raised Three
sons, Gray, Gard and Craig.
In the 1960's, Jim worked at
Alberta Vital Statistics for a number of years before joining the Public Trustee's Office
in August, 1970, as an Estates Officer. Jim left the Public Trustee's office in 1972
and worked for a short time at Consumer and Corporate Affairs Canada. In 1973,
following a dream, he moved his family to New Zealand Where they lived for a year before
returning to Canada. He was re-hired by the Public Trustee's Office in 1974 and was
a Trust Officer in the Deceased Estates Section until his death.
Jim had a fascination
with the Orient and enjoyed his trips to Hong Kong. Prior to his death he was
teaching English to Chinese students at the University of Alberta. He appreciated
fine dining and lunch with Jim was usually a memorable experience. A conscientious,
somewhat private man, he had a dry sense of humour and was generous to those he loved.
We will miss him and remember him fondly.
