The project will be composed of several parts:

  • A personal Web page

  •  Research Project

  •  Topic Project – Approval of instructor

  •  Publish Online Manual

  •  Publish Consulting Company

Requirements

There are three requirements for each of the sections. You will be required to hand in an electronic copy on floppy disk as well as two printed copies. One printed copy will be returned to you graded and the other will be kept in your file. You will also be required to post the files on to the web server and connect via the main page.

Date Due

  • The written and electronic portion of the project is due on: Saturday, April 15/2000
  • Presentations are due on: Saturday, April 1/2000

Class Hours 

Classes in March and April have been assigned for work on the projects. During this time, the instructor will be available to assist. Lab classes for the project are:

  • Saturday March 18/2000 (6hrs)

  • Tuesday March 21/2000 (3hrs)

  • Thursday March 30/2000 (3hrs)

  • Thursday April 6/2000 (3hrs)

  • Tuesday April 11/2000 (3hrs)

  • Thursday April 13/2000 (3hrs)

  • Saturday April 15/2000 (6hrs)

Marks 

The project is worth a total of 150 marks.

Requirements

You will be marked on design, coding, and content. You must also meet the specific requirements for each of the sub projects.

A project schedule must be defined. This should be completed as one of the first steps to completing the project. By establishing a schedule, you can set deadlines for yourself to ensure that you can complete your project on time. A schedule will keep you from waiting till the night before to complete your project. A schedule will also tell you if the scope of what you had in mind is feasible for the time allotted for the project.

Site layout must be considered. You will be given a directory on the Web server. You will be responsible for laying out the site you are developing for this project. Separate sub-directories should be created for each part of the project. There should be a directory for the online manual, consulting company, research project, and topic project. The personal page can reside in your main directory and serve as the “homepage” for the remaining directories. Remember to check all your links!

Personal Web Page (15 marks)

  • The personal Web page will contain the following:

  • Miscellaneous information about yourself (hobbies, sports, general)

  •  Contain picture of yourself (digital camera or scanned) – student photo

  •  Links to your online manual

  •  Links to your company page

  •  Links to your research project

  •  Links to your topic project

  •  Must contain a link back to the IMOS main page.

  •  Should include at least (but not limited to) 2 graphics on each page

  •  Student resume

  •  Student’s bio of accomplishments

  •  Minimum of three pages not including manual and company pages

  •  Pages and media is not to exceed 1 MB

Online Manual & Consulting Company (10 marks)

The online manual & consulting company should be complete. Links should be provided back to the personal web page as well as to the IMOS home page. Each is worth 5 marks.

Research Project (75 marks)

The research project will be picked from a list of available topics. These will be given out individually. If there is a topic which is not listed and it relates to this course then upon approval it can be used. The research project is a good way to obtain information on a number of topics in a very short amount of time. Each student will be responsible for a unique topic. Topic projects from previous years can be visited for ideas but should not be copies. The research project will also consist of a presentation to the class. The presentation can describe or demo the software or concept. The presentation should be at least 10 minutes and no more than 20 minutes. It is recommended that the presentation contain demos (if applicable) and also utilize presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint.

  •  Picked from list of topics

  •  Independent research

  •  Information should be original (no copies from sites)

  •  Minimum of 5 pages

  •  Design considerations in terms of topic breakdown and linkage

  •  Must contain illustrations and examples

  •  Observe copyright infringement

  •  Each student must have a unique topic

  •  Pages should be consistent with theme, navigation, look and feel.

Research must include the following:

  • Mini training lessons on how to use the subject (where applicable)

  • Reasons for using and/or use on the Internet

  • FAQ on the subject

  • Acronyms commonly used relating to this subject

  • Minimum of 10 URLs to find more information on the subject

  • Your personal rating, usefulness and comments on each of the 10 URLs

  • Include graphics, sounds, demos where appropriate

  • Must contain a link back to the student home page

  • Must contain a link back to the IMOS home page

  • Size of pages and media not to exceed 2 MB (unless directed)

Topic Project (50 marks)

The topic project is a real life example of a Web site. The Web site can be based on something that you may choose to post on the Web for later use. The topic project must be of suitable content as it will also be posted on the Intranet/Internet of KUC. The project should serve a particular purpose. If you do not have any ideas, one can be assigned to you.

  • Design considerations in terms of site breakdown and linkage

  • Must contain illustrations

  • Observe copyright infringement

  • Provide links back to the personal home page

  • Provide links back to the IMOS home page

  • Pages should include, but are not limited to, 2 graphics

  • All pages should have navigational controls

  • Project design must be consistent (including navigation)

  • Size of pages and media not to exceed 2 MB (unless directed)
