Michael Rutheford was born in the Fraser Valley and attended school in Surrey, the British Columbia Institute of Technology, the University of British Columbia and the University of Alberta where he obtained his phD in soil sciences and renewable resources. Here are a few word from Mike that describe his philosophy about photography:
"Fine art photography is a very important component of my life. Even though I have been doing photogaphy off and on for the last 20 years it has only been the last few years that I have come to realize the passion I have for fine art photography. I now devote a large component of my time and energy to this art form. Black and White is my medium of choice because I can express myself much better with monochrome than with color. I try to acheive drama in my photography. Black and White has more impact for me than does color."
Mike uses the finest material in producing and mounting his photographs. He processes and prints all his photographs himself using archival materials and techniques. Many of Mike's prints are the result of a 25,000Km trip he took through British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska during the summer of 1996
