The Boston Terrier was originally developed in 1865 in Boston. They were originally a cross between the Old English Toy Bulldog and the White English Terrier with a dash of French Bulldog. This early version of the Boston Terrier looked nothing like the Bostons of today. The ancestor of all modern Bostons was a dog named Hooper's Judge, owned by a Mr. Robert C. Hooper. Judge was a cross between an English Bulldog and an English Terrier, with its appearance leaning more to the Bulldog side.Boston Terriers reached the height of their popularity in the 1920s, accounting for 20 to 30 percent of show entries at the time. |
The Boston Terrier is a very intelligent, smooth coated, square-headed, compactly built, well balanced lightning bolt. Boston coloring is generally brindle, black or seal accompanied with an even distribution of white markings. A Boston's body is short, compact, and quite powerfully muscled, especially for such a small dog. Boston Terriers are very friendly and would rather be with people than with any other animal. They are gentle, well mannered and extremely good with children. A Boston is well suited for apartment living considering their small stature and short coat. Boston Terrier almost have too much energy, just wind them up and watch them go. Because of their powerful back legs, a Boston will gladly spend all day high jumping or breaking Donovan Bailey's record. |
