The IMOS course constitutes one-third of Kwantlen's Information Technology & Computer Support Specialist Certificate program, thus allowing students unable to attend full-time classes to nevertheless aspire to IT certification. For those interested only in networking and Web design, the program stands equally well as a self-contained Citation program.
As Kwantlen's calendar points out, the IMOS program is a good place to start your Webmastering career. Students gain an insight into network physical design, communication control methods and protocols, and network security. Communications developments that make 'Net technology possible are explored, as are the many faces of the Internet (e-mail, newsgroups, browsers, IRC, etc.) Building on this background, the student moves on to Web design with HTML, JavaScript, and Java Applets. Image mapping and graphics technologies, HTML editors and design-related software are all assessed. Goal-oriented planning and cooperation are stressed.
The IMOS program commences in mid-October and runs to mid-May. Classroom time consists of two 7 - 10 p.m. sessions per week plus 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. every other Saturday for a total of 68 sessions/240 hours. Classes are conducted at the Langley campus where library and study facilities are available.
Classroom seats are limited, and an assessment interview and/or testing may be administered to determine the student's ability to cope with course material. Basic requirements include:
- Grade 12 or equivalent, or mature student status
- Fluency in English
- Reasonable keyboard and touch-typing skills
- Introduction to Microcomputers, MS-DOS, and Windows95, OR
- A good understanding of file and directory structures
- Basic word processing skills
Aspiring students should be aware that time demands of the IMOS course are fairly stringent and as it is a part-time course, assignments, research, study, and extra reading will be conducted mainly outside classroom hours.
At the time of this presentation (Spring '99), cost of the program was $2,900, including books. A payment plan is available, and receipts good for income tax purposes will be issued.
Free information seminars are conducted prior to the start of each session. Call Continuing Education at 599-3205 for dates and times.
