- Simon Fraser University at Harbour Centre (Vancouver BC,
Canada)
Submitted by: Richard K. Smith, Associate Director, Management of Technology Centre for
Policy Research on Science and Technology
Our research and teaching is sponsored and the sponsorship splits
the activities between two universities. We knew from the outset that this would be a
challenge and we sought to identify and obtain solutions that would put us at the cutting
edge of distance education. CU-SeeMe is an example of that kind of solution. We were one
of the first off-campus sites to try it. We are using CU-SeeMe in distance education
graduate seminars in management of technology including masters and Ph.D level courses
conducted in four time zones. A typical conference has Richard Smith in Vancouver, Paul
Guild in Waterloo, with Cape Breton added in at times. Mexico and U.S. links will be made
soon and China and Singapore after that. A typical week includes an assigned reading, a
written presentation distributed electronically, an oral presentation distributed by
telephone and CU-SeeMe with an in-house tool allowing PowerPoint slides to be triggered
remotely on IP networks. We run the seminars as 'normal' as we can in Waterloo, and then
use the distance links to make the 'remote' students as at home as possible. We use
Hypercard, PowerPoint, electronic mail, AppleShare file servers, and most recently Web
documents to share textual and visual (but non-video) information.
- Bell Atlantic
Submitted by: Christopher Callender, District Network Manager
At Bell Atlantic we are the customers' first choice for
communication and information services in every market we serve, domestic and
international. My responsibilities include working with the ISP's/OLS (On-Live Service
Providers) on promotions, marketing and positioning of ISDN. At Bell Atlantic we have used
CU-SeeMe for several years now. White Pine Softwares support pulled together my
hardware, platform, and software solution for a "one stop call" for IP video
customer support.
