Planning Your Page

When readers land on your page they don't see titles or other details. It's the overall pattern and contrast of your page they notice first. Mixed typefaces and over used text headers make it difficult for the reader to establish an immediate feel for the page.

As a rule, HTML headers should be used sparingly. You should also restrict your text line length to 40 to 60 characters. That works out to a just over 400 pixels.

Remember, good typography depends on the visual contrast between the text and surrounding white space. Nothing attracts the eye and brain of the viewer like strong contrast and distinctive patterns.

We read primarily by recognizing the overall shape of words, not by looking at each letter and putting them together to form a word. Following from this, as you may know, all caps are definitely a non-starter. They are simply too hard to read.

For your headlines, use upper and lower case letters.

Text on a computer screen is hard to read because of the low resolution. Try to make reading it more enjoyable by ensuring your text suits your content. Developing a reader-friendly layout can do this. Keep your lines to a comfortable length and limit the use of headers.
