Really Big Drive-How Big Can You Get?
by Peter Doomy
A new standard of zip drives has been created by a local company called Really. It is a very affordable and useful big item called Big Drive. This device comes in the external parallel port version and internal version.
I tested the external parallel port version and found it very easy to install. All you have to do is to plug it into the parallel port, insert the start up disk, and run the set-up program, and that's it. Within 5 minutes I was reading and saving from the removable drive.
Where the power of this drive come in is that you are able to save approximately 5 Gb of files on one diskette. That is equal to a very huge bunch of 3.5" floppy diskettes worth of data. Since they are diskettes, they can be passed around and used by anyone with a Really Big Drive installed. The added bonus is that the parallel port version can easily be unplugged from your computer and installed on any other computer. Thus if you carry your diskettes and a Really Big Drive, you can have access to a huge amount of storage and data limited only by the number of Really Big diskettes you own.
The Big Drive can also be an extension of your hard drive. Applications can be moved to the diskettes as well as data. Once you need a specific file, then just pop in the diskette containing the file and there it is. The Big Drive is not as quick as you local hard drive, so think twice before you decide to move your 25 mb graphics package onto a Really Big diskette. For small applications and as a data archiver, it is great.
There was a variety of diskettes for the Big Drive from different manufacturers. The diskettes from Really cost approximately $360 for a pack of four.
The pricing for the unit is very affordable for the useability and usefullness of the Big Drive. Large amounts of portable data is the key. If you have to move huge chucks of data, this is probably the most affordable way to go.
This is a list of advantages to the Really Big Drive: 1)You can store large amounts of data on one disk.2)The disks are very protable.3)The unit can be portable and hooked up to many machines.4)The megabyte to price ratio makes it affordabe.5)It comes in 5 cool designer colors.
